Youth Arts Program Class Descriptions

Art History
Blair Swanson
This class will take a "hands on" approach to studying the Modern artists of our time. Each class will include background information as well as creating a piece of artwork inspired by the artist of that week!  Come have FUN while we learn about Van Gogh, Monet, Warhol, O’Keeffe, Matisse and Pollock to name a few!

Broadway Kids

In this class, students will explore the wonderful world of musical theater! Kids will learn songs and scenes from many of the great kid-friendly Broadway shows. Class will incorporate music, movement, and related games.

Worlds of Music
Flo Anito
Students will be exposed to music from all over the world, from African drumming to British pop. We will play games and use art and movement to express what we hear. Kids will explore instrumentation, rhythm, style, and function of music in various parts of the world.

Photo Documentary

In this integrated class, students will document life at CHAW as it happens around them - the classes, the students, the instructors and the artwork using both digital and darkroom techniques. Students will work together to create an album out of their collective experiences; all students will leave the semester with an album to keep .

Join us for a hip-hop experience.  Students will focus on isolations, combinations and choreography.

Wizards of Oz

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Students will journey through the world of Oz with artistic explorations in mixed media. Projects will include mask making, ceramics, and sculpture construction from recycled materials.

Take a Ride on the Yellow Submarine

Explore the power of imagination and create magical worlds through painting, fiber, collage, sculpture and drawing.  Students will watch the Yellow Submarine for inspiration and will discover how far their imagination can take them. Participants will learn how to take an idea and tell a story through the use of various materials.

Hula

Learn the traditional dance from the Hawaiian Islands. From grass skirts to eukuleles, students will explore the significance of hula and legends surrounding its origins.

Capitol Hill Youth Chorus

Through professional instruction in vocal musical performance, the Chorus builds connections among public, private, parochial, and home-schooled students taking advantage of the special multicultural nature of the Capitol Hill community while providing a unique educational experience. The Chorus, made up of singers starting at age 6, performs an extensive and ambitious repertoire.

Exploring Sculpture

By creating an imaginary model of life in another galaxy, children will learn a variety of sculpture techniques such as carving, modeling, assemblage. This long-term project will bring together sculpture, architecture and installation art while giving children the opportunity to express their ideas individually as well as part of a group.

Acting: Fractured Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales
Jacqueline E. Lawton
Explore the fundamentals of acting, including vocal work, movement, character development, improvisation and scene study. In Acting: Fractured Fables and Fairy Tales students will work in groups to select and adapt their favorite fairytales into plays that will be performed for their parents, families, and friends. Students will choose from the time honored classics found in Aesop’s Fables, the Grimms’ Brothers’ Myths, and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson.

Drumming
Jensen Kvarnes
Students will work on conga drums and other hand drums learning how to vocalize, play and identify different rhythms. Using those rhythms as a foundation, students will improvise and enhance the rhythms with other percussion instruments including the agogo, afuci, maracas, tambourine, xylophone, and/or piano. We will also explore other media to make rhythms such as objects of nature, typical objects of the house and body rhythms.

Guitar

Together we will get to know the guitar, one of the most versatile instruments in American music.  In this class we will learn to tune the guitar, use good technique, strum chords, and learn songs as we each prepare a song to perform for our first recital! Students must have their own guitar. Rentals can be arranged through Foxes Music in Falls Church, VA. For more information please call 703.533.7393.

Clay Portraiture

Come explore new techniques of working with clay when we make portraits of many types!  In this class, clay projects include personal masks, self-portraits, portraits of animals, and even your favorite cartoon character!  Previous clay experience is requested.

Clay Magic

Come get your hands dirty as we explore the many forms clay can take!  We will dive into important techniques such as the score and slip method, the pinch pot vs. coil pot method, and the slab roll method.

Photography

This photography class is designed for youth with some or no experience in photography or the visual arts.  Classes will cover pinhole photography, camera use, exposure, composition, film processing, darkroom printing, toning and hand coloring, and some digital photography. Each class will define additional projects based on the students' backgrounds and interests. All necessary equipment and materials are provided.

Tap
Aggie Wright
Tap dance classes are a fun way for children of all ages to develop their coordination, balance, rhythm and agility. This class teaches the fundamentals including tap rhythm steps, flaps, shuffles and shuffle combinations that are taught through progressive exercises that make learning easy and develop each child's natural ability at their own pace.

Drawing and Beyond

Children will study the fundamental concepts of drawing and 2D media. Class projects will be divided into the different subject matters in art history: Portrait, landscape and still-life while introducing the concepts of representation, interpretation and abstraction. Different drawing techniques will be explored as well as other drawing-related media such as monotype, ink wash and collage.

Drawing Intensive

Students in this class will learn about the fundamental concepts of drawing and 2D media. Observation, one of the main tools in drawing will be complemented with theory on renaissance perspective, human proportions and composition. Assignments will include the four most important subject matters in art history such as portrait, landscape including the study of plants and animal life, still life and interior spaces. Experimentation with different media from charcoal and graphite, to ink wash will be stressed throughout the assignments.

Mixed Media

Explore art in a new way by learning to use a variety of materials! The different media we will experiment with includes: painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, sculpture and more!  We will use a combination of these mediums to create unique art objects in both 2D and 3D forms!

This class will introduce students to some of the basic forms of dance, providing an overview to spark further interest in a particular style or dance in general; styles may include ballet, modern, and jazz among others.

This course will introduce students to the wonderful world of theater. Children will participate in a variety of games and exercises and learn about being onstage!

Explore the fundamentals of acting including vocal work, movement, developing a character, improvisation and scenes. The class will also prepare students for a final presentation for friends and families!

Animal Adventures

Explore the animal kingdom and let your imagination run WILD. Students will experiment with mixed media—paper-mache, clay,recycled materials—to create a wild animal kingdom all their own.

Puppet Production

This class studies trends of contemporary visual art production in which students develop an art project that combines sculpture, installation and performance art. Children will create a puppet show (story, puppet creation, stage design and performance) based on current events. Creativity and imagination will be stressed as well as the importance of art as a means of communication of ideas and feelings.

Wheel Throwing

Come explore the adventures of throwing clay on the wheel. The students will also learn the process of trimming and glazing their thrown creations.

Art and the Environment

This course uses art as a medium to teach children 5 to 8 years old basic concepts in ecology.  Utilizing proven methods in environmental education in conjunction with a diverse art curriculum, students will explore their creative capacities through the natural world.  Students will explore the seas, mountains, rivers, forests, and a wide variety of other ecosystems and species from all over the planet.

Illustrating Your LIfe: Telling Your Stories Through Art

This course explores students' creativity with inspiration from thier most memorable moments. Through various media, students will illustrate five memorable moments, special memories, people, places, and/or stories. The goal is to enhance creative expression, encourage creative choice, and artistic storytelling. Students will come away with a greater sense of what is important to them as young people and as budding artists.

Digital Animation

This class will introduce students to diverse ways to use a computer to make short animations with soundtracks. Students also learn how to output the results to share with others over the web or as a DVD. Students will work individually as well as collaborating with each other on projects.

Intermediate Jazz Hip Hop*

This class is for students with a good foundation in dance basics. Classes include a warm-up focusing on placement, coordinate, flexibility, and jazz technique in addition to learning choreography. All students must have a black leotard (black t-shirts for the boys), black jazz pants, and jazz shoes by the second class.

Beginner Jazz Hip Hop*

An excellent class to learn the basics of dance. Students will focus on coordination, flexibility, techniqe and choreography.

Advanced Jazz Hip Hop*

This class is designed for students that have a strong foundation in jazz and hip hop dance.

*It is important for each student to be in the appropriate level class for his/her training and ability. Ms. Rothstein will assess new students in the first 2 weeks and determine whether the student is in the appropriate class and make recommendations for class changes if necessary.
