WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Board of Directors of the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) will offer the third in a series of lectures on the arts, “Art and the Natural World: Exploring Andy Goldsworthy,” presented by Mathew Wilburn, Ph.D., on Saturday, May 10, 2008, 4:00-5:30 PM, at CHAW, 545 7th Street SE. Andy Goldsworthy (born July 26, 1956) is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist living in Scotland who produces site-specific sculpture and land art situated in natural and urban settings. His art involves the use of natural and found objects, to create both temporary and permanent sculptures which draw out thecharacter of their environment. In this talk, Dr. Wilburn will discuss Andy Goldsworthy's life, work, and the relevance of it in contemporary society. He will explore the ways in which Goldsworthy's work informs an environmental ethic while offering possibilities for new directions in education that bridge environmental studies and the arts. Matthew Wilburn earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, England. He is a Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society and a member of the Society, Environment, and Development Research Cluster within the Department of Geography. He has worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service as a Conservation Training Specialist and served as the Senior Program Manager for Latin American/Caribbean, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Previously, he studied in both Ireland and Scotland. He earned his Master of Philosophy at theUniversity of Dublin, Trinity College, Ireland, completed one year of study at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and holds a B.A. from the University of Tulsa. As an instructor in CHAW’s Youth Arts Program, he teaches "Art and the Environment" which allows him to bridge two of his deeper interests in ecology and the arts. He is currently a Professorial Lecturer in Geography at The George Washington University.
Ingrid Catron, Chair of the CHAW Board’s Lecture Series, said, “The CHAW Board is delighted to feature Dr. Wilburn in its lecture series. Our series will take a break for the summer but will continue in Fall 2008 with more lectures by distinguished experts in the fields of visual arts, writing, and dance. The series is part of our mission of building community through the arts. The Board views the series as a unique opportunity to reflect on the various disciplines grounding the arts.”
