Capitol Hill Art League
What is the Art League? The Capitol Hill Art League (CHAL), which is composed of approximately 150 artists, promotes a number of activities each season. CHAL mounts a series of eight juried exhibitions each year, conducts gallery talks, holds lectures on a variety of art related topics, offers workshops, and strives to develop a sense of community, supportive of the artist. The greater Washington community is encouraged to participate in all of these great events. The most time-consuming event is the monthly juried exhibition, which the Art League has been doing for 12 years. On average, the works of 30 local artists are accepted into each of these shows. Every season the Art League governing board and volunteer members research a body of judges, develop themes around which to build each exhibit, receive the artwork, and supervise the judging and hanging of the pieces selected. Each show opens with a reception and a gallery talk by the judge chosen to jury that month's event. The Art League has also produced art shows in public spaces such as banks, restaurants, and offices and is currently hanging shows at Skadden Arps law firm.
