Art League Membership
The Capitol Hill Art League mounts a series of juried exhibitions each
year, conducts gallery talks, holds lectures on a variety of art related
topics, offers workshops, and strives to develop a sense of community,
supportive of the artist. The greater Washington community is encouraged
to participate in all of these great events.
Membership Application
Submission of work
- Membership dues are paid annually. The dues are $36 payable on or before
October 1, which marks the beginning of the season. A prorated dues fee is
available for those joining the Art League after the season begins.
- Up to 3 pieces of work may be submitted to the Capitol Hill Art League
ONLY between the specified receiving times.
- A non-refundable entry fee of $5/$8/$10 (for one/two/three pieces) is due
at the time of receiving. There are no size limitations if we are able to
accommodate it in our gallery.
- Works must be securely and suitably framed with screw eyes and wires firmly
attached. Work will be eliminated if poorly prepared or still wet. Edges must
be finished. No staples or tacks may show on front or sides. It is important
that your artwork show off to its best advantage. In this regard, we suggest
that you use white or cream mats and simple frames (unless the frame is part
of the artwork itself). We require good sturdy frames and wire on the back
for hanging. Please refrain from using weak frames with clips on the back.
These works may be declined and you will need to make another trip in to replace
it. The wire must be connected to the frame via eye screws or Nielsen wire
holders so it will be secure enough to hold for a long time.
- Watercolors, drawings, sumi-e, lithographs, photographs, and anything with
a paper mat, should have a protective covering of glass or Plexiglas. No taped
or clip frames are allowed.
- All works should be original works of art. No copies.
- Work submitted must be current, completed within the last three years.
- Each work must have an entry label (available at receiving-time) attached
to the back upper left corner, designating the artist's name, phone number,
and entry number.
- ALL WORKS MUST BE FOR SALE. No prices may be changed after work is entered.
- We cannot stress too strongly the emphasis on keeping prices consistent.
- The Art League Steering Committee will be the sole and FINAL judges of
the work's acceptability for submission.
- Accepted art work titles will be posted online at www.chaw.org by 10 am the day after judging. Because storage space is so limited, we ask that
delined work be picked up as soon as possible. If pieces are too large or too cumbersome
to fit into the closet, the artist must pick up the work no later than one day
following the judging. Barring exceptional circumstances, all other work should
be removed from the closet before opening reception for the current show (usually
the first Saturday following receiving) as the reception is prepared in the
same space. For convenience, the gallery at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop
is open from 9:00 am – 9:00 pm Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am –
6:00 pm Fridays, and 9:30am – 2:00 pm on Saturdays (excluding summer).
- Work left longer than 90 days will become the property of The Capitol Hill
Art League. Remember, work MUST be checked out at the front desk.
- A work accepted for a show and listed in the program may not be re-entered
in a later juried show. A declined work, however, may be re-submitted.
Judging
Each month's show is selected by an invited judge who is not an Art League
member. Each show may be expected to reflect the opinions of its judge. Election
of a different judge each month assures variety in successive exhibits and a
broader opportunity to member artists. Members are invited to make suggestions
concerning judges by contacting an Art League Steering Committee member. Your
feedback will help to ensure that your experience with the Art League is of
the highest quality.
Exhibition
Work selected for Capitol Hill Art League juried shows hangs for the duration
of the show. Generally, sold work may not be removed until the close of the
show.
Sale of Work
Although in the temporary possession of the Art League, works of art remain
the property of the artist. Upon sale, ownership transfers from the artist to
the purchaser. The Art League sells works of art by cash, check, or major credit
card. The Art League does not negotiate prices and urges the artist to adhere
to this policy after work leaves the gallery. Payment for work sold is disbursed
during the month following the month of sale and is 70% of the sales price exclusive
of sales tax. The 30% commission which the Art League retains is used to defray
the cost of maintaining the gallery, and supports special events, programs,
workshops, and classes sponsored by the Art League
Referrals
It is understood that the artist will not undersell the Art League. Members
are expected to remit to the Art League a percentage of any sales made through
the Art League or through the Art League’s direct contact or referral.
All sales handled through the Art League are subject to a 30% commission.
If, through the Capitol Hill Art League, a patron wishes to see additional
work by an artist and a studio visit is arranged, a sale is made, and the artist
handles the entire process; the artist owes a 10% referral fee to the Art League.
