CHAW’s private music program is growing with even more talented teaching artists, more available lessons, and more instruments! Instruction is currently available in piano, drums, voice, guitar, cello, violin, viola, and flute. Students of all ages have the opportunity to participate in Repertoire Classes and Recitals each session.
CHAW welcomes the newest private music instructors Gwyn Jones (flute), Doug Welcome (guitar), and Megan Yanik (violin/viola).
Flutist Gwyn Jones, performs as a freelance musician throughout the DC area with a variety of ensembles from classical chamber groups to full orchestras and wind ensembles. A versatile musician, Gwyn explores musical genres, from classical styles and 20th/21stcentury techniques to musical theatre and jazz. Gwyn holds a Master of Music (M.M.) degree in Performance from Florida State University and was a teaching fellow at the University of North Texas, where she also conducted the UNT flute choir. Gwyn is available for private lessons!
Violist Dr. Megan Fergusson Yanik enjoys a multifaceted career as both a performer and teacher. She has performed with orchestras throughout the United States, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Toledo Symphony and Richmond Symphony. She holds degrees in viola performance from Rice University (BM), the New England Conservatory (MM), and the University of Michigan (DMA) and is available for private lessons!
Guitarist Douglas Welcome found his first musical inspiration in an old dust-covered player piano buried among junk in a friend’s basement. Through adolescence, he explored music and technology through learning to play piano, guitar and trombone as well as attempting to record music clips with primitive Microsoft Windows 95 software. He studied at Point Loma Nazarene University and San Diego University focusing on jazz and electronic music. Doug is working toward his Ph.D. in music theory while continuing to write, play, tinker and teach.
Doug currently teaches Guitar during CHAW’s after school Youth Arts Program and is available for private lessons! Also, students in grades 3-6 can join Doug for Instrument Building Camp running June 18-22, 2012. From drums to clarinets to violins, students will look at basic acoustic principles to understand how musical instruments produce sound. Children will learn the principles behind instrument construction and walk away with a cigar box guitar! Check it out: http://www.douglaswelcome.com/2012/02/29/cigar-box-guitar-finished/
