Mind of the Artist, Part XXIX: Charles Martin

July 9, 2018

Short, sweet, and to the point. CHAL Artist of the Month, Charles Martin, gives us the bullet points to his life as an artist. His works of art exemplify his attention to direct observation and realism as one sees it. Charles, thank you for sharing your work, life, and story with us!

I was born and raised in a small Long Island town in metropolitan New York. As a kid made cartoons for friends and joined the High School Art Club. I went to Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY where I earned a BFA, majoring in  Printmaking. Afterward, I entered the US Army and Air Force, and served as an Intelligence Analyst. During my time in the armed forces I had an accident and was medically retired as a Staff Sergeant.

Back to art: I studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art for five years. Achieved the Certificate, and won the Cresson Memorial Traveling Scholarship; a wonderful time of painting and education with excellent teachers. Later, I attended the New York Studio School for two years and further diversified my education.

I paint still life, figures, and landscape. Figuration has been my favorite. Direct observation has been the motivation.  Currently, I am looking to expand and work with additional sources, by attending open life drawing sessions and visiting museums for help and inspiration.

I have exhibited in Philadelphia, New York, and Washington.
