YAP- After School Arts 2016-2017

The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) Youth Arts Program is a dynamic curriculum of classes, performance, and exhibition opportunities emphasizing arts as a way of life for a lifetime.  Students in the Youth Arts Program (YAP) develop a unique artistic voice as they explore and create dance, theater, music, art, ceramics, and photography while working in community with their peers.

Studio Descriptions coming soon! For now, download our brochure to see a list of class offerings.

CHAW provides a comprehensive and sequential art experience that builds skills, fosters a love of arts, and expands artistic expression.  Experienced and dedicated teaching artists encourage students to dream big, focus hard, and commit with passion while investigating a wide array of processes and techniques designed to nurture artistic development.

Classes are organized by day, age, studio, and teaching artist.  Projects, performances, themes, and processes vary from class to class and semester to semester, so there are always new techniques to learn, fresh and creative ideas to pursue, and skills to build upon.  Each age group includes a Level I and Level II option, so no matter where your child enters the program—as a longtime YAP participant, brand new student, or somewhere in between—there will be an appropriately-paced class that will feel both safe and challenging.  Choose whether to stay on a track, gradually advancing to higher levels of a single medium, explore new disciplines, or mix and match—we will always meet kids where they are and help them discover ways to dive deeper, learn more, and work together to create a community within their classes and across the entire program.

The Music Together® approach develops every child’s birthright of basic music competence by encouraging the actual experiencing of music through playful activities rather than by the learning of concepts or information about music. Fee includes two professionally recorded CDs of the semester’s songs, rhythm chants, and play along music; a new songbook with illustrations and activities; and Music Together at Home: Helping Your Child Grow Musically, a book and DVD designed to educate parents and caregivers about music in their children’s lives. An exciting new collection of songs is presented each semester! Birth-5 years. Parent or caregiver participates with child (does not need to be 1:1 ratio of adult and child–one adult to two children is okay). One infant, aged nine months or younger at time of registration, may attend free with a registered sibling. One infant per family, please. For questions about Music Together®, please contact www.littlestepsmusic.com or 703.536.4706 or LittleStepsMusic@gmail.com. Price of class includes materials fee. Subtract $40 for second child (must be sibling). If class is canceled by the instructor or due to inclement weather, CHAW will make every effort to reschedule.

The studio is home to 10 electric wheels and a large variety of tools to work with both wheel thrown and hand built ceramic. Handbuilding equipment includes a large slab roller and a wall mounted extruder. All general tools are supplied, ie: sponges, aprons, carving tools, knives, texture tools, etc. Specialty tools like underglaze pencils and centering tools are not supplied. CHAW also provides colored slip, high fire glaze, underglaze, and various stains to decorate pieces. CHAW stocks 4 kinds of clay: Standard’s Sculpture, Buff, and Brown Stoneware clays and Highwater’s Little Loafers.

CHAW fires glaze to cone 6 and occasionally to cone 04. The firing schedule is roughly once a week for both bisque and glaze. All glazes are made in-house and we ask that students only use our glazes or glazes approved by the studio staff. All students pay a materials fee which covers clay, glaze, and firing fees as part of their registration. More clay and materials may be purchased any time through the front desk.

OPEN STUDIO

Open studio is open to past and present CHAW students. Generally, dates for open studio follow the class session schedule. Occasionally, it is cancelled for special events and cleaning. Please contact your instructor for more information. Wednesday supervised open studio is from 6:30-8:30pm and Saturday unsupervised from Noon-2:00pm. Students need to be cleaned up and upstairs at the 2:00pm end time on Saturday as CHAW closes at 2:00pm on Saturdays. Additional clay can be purchased through the front desk by giving your instructor or a studio assistant a receipt from payment.
