In this class, the students will be made familiar with the Photoshop desktop and use of some of the more common tools needed to manipulate and alter photos. Students will work with selection tools, filters and various views of a photo in order to fix such common problems as brightness, contrast, red eye, scratches and other noise. These skills are useful in restoring heirloom photos that have faded and been damaged from being stored in boxes and junk drawers. Students will also begin to work with layers and text tools in order to begin building the skill sets required to start simple design work. At the conclusion of this course, students will have the basic knowledge to build collages, import images from one photo to another and begin to build on the necessary skills required to tackle more advanced techniques that will be encountered in more advanced Photoshop instruction. File formats, resolution, camera settings and other topics will also be covered so that the students can make intelligent choices while using a digital camera and a scanner. (digital lab)

Instructor, Mark Isaac
Wednesdays 6:30 – 8:30 pm, June 17 – July 30 (7 weeks) WA4 - $210

The use of multiple photographs (or photographs and other media) to create one photographic image is almost as old as photography itself.  In this class, students will explore the history and current uses of collage, montage and composite imagery through classroom presentations.  Students will also spend considerable time creating unique and creative collage or composite imagery of their own.  Students can choose to work in a traditional darkroom setting, in a digital darkroom, or to combine images using non-photographic techniques.  Special attention will be paid to the limitless opportunities for composition and multifaceted meanings created by these complex images.  While traditional or digital darkroom experience may be helpful, the most important prerequisite is a strong interest in the creative possibilities of collage and composite imagery.
