Capitol Hill Arts Workshop

This class will thematically explore masterpieces in the National Gallery of Art. It is for beginning art on-lookers that want to become experts in observation, conversation, and all points art historical. Fun, discussion-based tours will enlighten participants on how to engage with any art, while picking up behind the scenes museum tid bits. From nervous to inquisitive, all students will be given the tools to becoming budding art enthusiasts, great for your next date, a party trick, or just personal growth!

Produce, fire, and glaze pots and other functional works of art. In addition to creating hand-built pieces, we will use natural and found objects to create prints and designs on our pottery. Similar to a fossil, we will create imprints of objects that will create texture and record the shape of that object forever in our glazed work of art!

This class is an introduction to many different styles of dance. Students will learn basics for ballet, jazz, hip hop, and tap. A variety of other styles will also be explored, possibly belly dance, salsa, swing, hula, and more.

Learn basic music skills through singing based activities and games. This class is perfect students will little or no formal music training, beginning readers or students with limited or no experience.

Using personal experiences and anecdotes as inspiration, create a theme, characters and story, and develop them into a script. Discover and explore common challenges of young people through this collaborative original stage drama. Give voice to your feelings, thoughts and opinions. Learn the art of storytelling, character development and being a part of an ensemble. This class will also include a scenery component in which the students will create a themed backdrop using collaged images.

This class explores a variety of three-dimensional techniques to create projects that expand the concept of sculpture while awakening ecological and social awareness.

Comics, poems, short stories, wizards, dragons, socks, candy - all of these will be explored in this adventure. Class will culminate with a portfolio presentation.

Make your own materials for art-making. Experiment with paper making, crayon making, and a variety of handmade doughs then create a cook book of art making recipes so the fun can continue at home!

Learn the fundamental concepts of drawing and 2D media. Class projects will be divided into the different subject matters in art history: portrait, landscape and still-life, while introducing the concepts of representation, interpretation and abstraction. Explore different drawing techniques as well as other drawing-related media such as monotype, ink wash and collage. Returning students also welcome. Build upon previous knowledge to develop new projects.

This class is ideal for students with no experience or for students who have already worked in the digital lab. Class projects include writing story boards, using the digital camcorder, editing movies on the computer, adding titles and special effects, adding soundtracks, and making DVDs. The class will involve a mixture of individual projects and team projects.

Experiment with a variety of media from graphite to charcoal while learning and perfecting the fundamental concepts of drawing. This class will explore possibilities of black and white as well as the use of color through projects that emphasize line, value, shape and composition. Returning students will build up on previous knowledge to develop new projects.

An extension of Drawing Fundamentals and More, this class is designed to give more advanced drawing students the opportunity to build on the skills developed in the first hour of class through participation in an extended class session. Student must be registered for Fundamentals of Drawing from 5:00 – 6:00 in order to enroll in Advanced Fundamentals of Drawing.

Learn the basic techniques and steps for three classical dance forms: ballet, tap, and jazz. This is a good class for students who do not know what style of dance they want to learn - or for students who want to learn all three!

Every Native culture has unique stories and ancient myths that explain the world. In this class we will learn about some of these colorful stories and use them as creative inspiration for ceramic projects. Students will learn to make small functional pieces, whimsical sculptures, and story-telling tiles.

Do you often find yourself drumming a pencil on your desk or clapping along to your favorite song? Here’s your chance to learn drumming techniques, call and response, improvisation, and basic rhythm reading using Tubano drums.

Work with a script from the the first read through to blocking to performance! Students will put on a short play working from a script. They will learn about character development, script analysis, stage movement, ensemble acting and performance. The class will end with a performance in the black box for family and friends. This class is perfect for the student with a dramatic flair.

Learn to look creatively at paintings by Monet, Picasso, Pollack and create a play based off of the stories behind the masterpiece. This class is a great way to get out of your head and into your hands. Students will develop strong basic skills on the pottery wheel and make functional pottery forms in the process. Course instruction will focus on the potter’s wheel, including instruction on shaping, trimming, glazing and firing pottery pieces. We’ll cover the fundamentals of working with clay, centering, throwing cylinders and bowls, making handles and attachments, as well as glazing and decorating. Learning to use the potters wheel takes patience, focus, and practice. It is also super-relaxing and guaranteed to be the most rewarding mess you make all week. Beginners and intermediate students are welcome, as well as self-directed hand builders and sculptors. No class 2/20/12.

Ever wonder while some of the photographs you take look great, other don't? Ever look at all the bells and whistles on your camera and wonder if one of them can make coffee? This class is designed for those who need help unlocking the mysteries of the digital camera.

This class emphasizes the fundamentals of ballet and encourages ballet as a means of improved body awareness, poise, grace, musicality, flexibility, and self-expression. Classes are structured to include warm-up exercises, barre technique and center floor work. Ballet shoes and comfortable clothes are recommended. No prior dance experience required.

Learn the guitar by playing popular songs by artists from around the world as well as some training in Blues, improvisation and basic music theory.

This is an introduction to tap dancing for adults. Learn to shuffle, flap, and all the basics to get you moving. Students should have tap shoes and wear comfortable clothes. No prior dance experience required.

This Luigi Technique inspired Jazz dance class will include warm-ups, stretching and technique building with a focus on exercises across the floor and new combinations for each class to learn, execute and perfect. The body positions in parallel will be reviewed, healthy posture will be emphasized, and dance expression to music will be highlighted. Beginner and intermediate students are welcome. Ballet shoes and loose fitting clothes are required.

Students will explore many ways to move through creative dance, tumbling and fun upbeat music. The tumbling segment will aid students in the development of strength, coordination and flexibility. Students will also learn a variety of introductory dance steps and terminology. During this class we will routinely go over the importance of taking turns, following directions and having fun! This is a PreK , child-only class.

Using expressive movement and creative interpretations of favorite stories, characters, animals and activities your child will have fun exercising while developing coordination, control and expression. This is a PreK, child-only class.

This is an opportunity for artists to work on drawings or paintings in front of a live model in a session without an instructor. Please bring your own drawing materials. Easels are available. No class on 10/2.

This class is designed for beginning and intermediate painting students. Beginners will get an introduction to handling material, safety and basic color theory. Beginning students will have the opportunity to learn to paint from a simple, but challenging still life. Experienced painting students will be assigned more complex subject matter. Students will complete one or two paintings during the 8 week class. All materials are supplied. Students should wear old clothes and bring one roll of paper towels.

This workshop is designed for the aspiring watercolor artist, those with some experience, and those who are just getting started.

In this class we'll cover many technical and creative topics which will help you understand how to use your digital camera inside and out. These topics include: apertures, shutter speeds, depth of field, motion effects, equivalent exposures, lenses, exposure, exposure modes and compensation, metering modes, ISO, white balance, histograms, image recording quality, basic rules of composition, and much more. Bring your camera and instruction manual to the first session.

There are so many ways to add interesting and dynamic flair to vessels, tiles, and sculptural work. The creative process goes far beyond the shape and structure of your piece. We will explore carving, painting with underglaze, using slips, reliefs, texture etc. Half of the class time will be spent learning to throw on the wheel or handbuild either sculptural or functional ware, emphasis will be on technique and decorative possibilities through surface design.

If you've taken Intro to Digital Photography, or have worked a bit on your own and could benefit from guided instruction to grasp the overall process of making great photographs, this class is for you. We work on strengthening the basics and taking better control of the act of photography. As well as improving camera work, the class takes a deeper look into how important a computer and post-camera work is to the story. Minimum experience necessary, digital camera required.

Students currently enrolled in ceramics classes at CHAW may use this time to work independently on projects.

This class is designed for people with some experience in watercolor painting AND/OR an interest in chalk pastel. (no pastel experience required).

Here is your chance to learn specific dance moves and steps that define the 70’s, including the ever so popular Hustle. Binahkaye Joy, your devoted Liberated Booty Coach, leads a fun total-body movement class that celebrates booty dances from around the world and gives you space to create and share your own dances too. This booty liberation is appropriate for all levels. Participants also have the option of collaborating and presenting a liberated booty dance as a class at the end of the session.

Our new one-week formats, extended camp day, and wide variety of creative and recreational offerings provide ease and flexibility in scheduling. Small classes staffed by caring and talented arts and education professionals insure individualized attention in a safe environment for your child.
