Masterpieces and Muses: Museums 101

This class will thematically explore masterpieces in the National Gallery of Art. It is for beginning art on-lookers that want to become experts in observation, conversation, and all points art historical. Fun, discussion-based tours will enlighten participants on how to engage with any art, while picking up behind the scenes museum tid bits. From nervous to inquisitive, all students will be given the tools to becoming budding art enthusiasts, great for your next date, a party trick, or just personal growth!

Produce, fire, and glaze pots and other functional works of art. In addition to creating hand-built pieces, we will use natural and found objects to create prints and designs on our pottery. Similar to a fossil, we will create imprints of objects that will create texture and record the shape of that object forever in our glazed work of art!

Ceramic Basics- S112AC1

This class is a great way to get out of your head and into your hands. Students will develop strong basic skills on the pottery wheel and make functional pottery forms in the process. Course instruction will focus on the potter’s wheel, including instruction on shaping, trimming, glazing and firing pottery pieces. We’ll cover the fundamentals of working with clay, centering, throwing cylinders and bowls, making handles and attachments, as well as glazing and decorating. Learning to use the potters wheel takes patience, focus, and practice. It is also super-relaxing and guaranteed to be the most rewarding mess you make all week. Beginners and intermediate students are welcome, as well as self-directed hand builders and sculptors. No class 2/20/12.
