This class will thematically explore artists and masterpieces in the National Gallery of Art's collection, featuring: Renaissance, American, and Modern/Contemporary art. It is for beginning art on-lookers that want to become experts in observation, conversation, and all points art historical. Fun, discussion-based tours will enlighten participants on how to engage with any art, while picking up behind the scenes museum tid-bits. Kids ages 5 – 12 with parent This class is for students looking for a special field trip experience to explore the National Gallery of Art. These classes will focus on three themes: Statues and Stories, Colors and Shapes, and People and Places. It is for all lovers of art and stories that want to become experts on museum exploration. Students will learn how to look at, talk about, and interact with art at a museum. An imagination and sense of adventure is required! Families are encouraged to join and participate. From hand building to wheel work this class provides you with the opportunity to learn and practice basic ceramics techniques. Instruction includes wedging, slab rolling and extruding, as well as centering, pulling and throwing functional pieces. Whether you've never touched clay or would just like a refresher course, this class is for you! With a wide variety of projects ending in basic glazing techniques, this class is intended for beginners to intermediate students. By the end of this course, students will have developed a strong base for continuing their artistic and therapeutic pursuits in clay.

Finding your authentic poetry voice by allowing and enjoying the leaps you make within your imagination and language. We will read and discuss poems, using different poetry exercises write at least one poem per session, we will share and discuss our work. Practice revising your poem. Beginners welcome. Class members will be given exercises to write between classes if they so desire as well as tips for revising poems. The last session we will give a reading to friends and public.

This Luigi Technique inspired Jazz dance class will include warm-ups, stretching and technique building with a focus on exercises across the floor and new combinations for each class to learn, execute and perfect. The body positions in parallel will be reviewed, healthy posture will be emphasized, and dance expression to music will be highlighted. Beginner and intermediate students are welcome. Ballet shoes and loose fitting clothes are required.

This class will help explain the basics behind digital photography while providing you with the essential tools to transform your images and create those finishing touches that make your photos pop! This class will meet on location a few times throughout the semester to explore natural lighting techniques and exposure basics, f-stops, shutter speeds and individual perspective when composing an image. Any digital camera will do and all levels are welcome.

This class is designed for students who have taken Drawing I or its equivalent and want to tackle drawing the human figure. Continuing students will build on skills honed in previous classes. The class will work from poses used in iconic works of art. Models will assume these poses and students will re-interpret them in their own media and styles. Instruction is individual, and the instructor will work with each student to determine the most appropriate medium and area of concentration for that student. Students will complete several drawings during the 6 week session.

Rock and Roll Camp (Grades 3 - 6)

Form a rock band and learn to jam with other musicians. Create a set list, explore the role of each performer’s instrument, and discover the importance of listening carefully to fellow band mates as you rock out to the classics. Improve your instrumental and vocal technique as well as your improvisational skills while preparing a set for our big show. Rock n’ Roll camp participants must be at least eight years old and have previous experience (at least one year of instruction) with a musical instrument or as a vocalist. Final performance on 7/6 at 5:00 pm. Without exception, grade level requirements indicate the grade complete in the 2011- 2012 school year.

Jewelry Making – SU12AJ1

Explore the art of jewelry making. Learn the steps to design and create earrings, necklaces and simple thread bracelets. We’ll also be going over elemental techniques for wire work, such as chain making, clasps, earwires and wire wrapping. Along with these easy to follow instructions we’ll also be working with found objects and finding ways to incorporate them into the jewelry that we create in class.

Music Theater Camp (Grades 2 - 6)

Sing, dance, act, and wow the audience! Cast members of all ages will learn the essentials of Music Theater, from singing to staging. Performers will dance their way through the greatest hits of Broadway, perfecting their time step and their kick line. Younger campers will begin with the basics of singing and dancing in production numbers, while older campers with more experience will show off their talents in solo singing, fully staged scenes, and more involved group numbers. All skill levels will be highlighted and encouraged. Final performances on 8/10 @ 5:00 pm and 8/11@ 11:00 am.
