I am a Zen priest, ordained in 1997 and have have been a teacher of Shodō (Japanese calligraphy) and Sumi-e (Chinese ink painting) for 9 years. In 2010 I participated in a calligraphy workshop given by renowned Japanese calligrapher Kazuaki Tanahashi at the Zen Mountain Monastery. In 2011 I received calligraphy instructions from Japanese calligraphy master Seikou Kaneko.
I teach in the Chinese and Japanese ancient traditions and the Zen spirit, but adapted to our time. There is emphasis on complete engagement and understanding of individual learning process. I can teach different styles of calligraphy from the standard or traditional to the avant garde, so that the practice of East Asian calligraphy can become a fun and illuminating discovery of artistic potential.
Jon will be leading Shodō workshops at CHAW to introduce students to the practice of East Asian (Japanese and Chinese) calligraphy and its culture. Workshop dates include:
• Saturday, 10/19 – one-day workshop from 1:00-6:00 p.m.
• Saturdays, 11/2-11/23 – four-session workshop from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
