CHAW invites students in grades six through eight to make great art at CHAW this year in one of our new middle school classes. Our expanded offerings help students add a splash of color to their week with an arts class (or two!).
The popular Ceramics Studio Jam returns under the direction of teaching artist (and CHAW staffer) Clay Hollenkamp.
“In my class the students will learn to use the various tools in a ceramics studio,” says Clay. “As they grow proficient with these tools and techniques I want to encourage them to think outside of the box and work on pieces with some sort of conceptual angle. We will certainly make plenty of functional pieces. Every parent should have a pencil holder made by their son or daughter proudly displayed on their desk! I also hope to inspire the students to think of ceramic art as a vehicle for ideas and not just as functional ware.”
New this year, CHAW hosts teaching artist Kate Deciccio and her class Art & Activism: Putting Your Passion into Action. Kate just returned from Peru working with The Belen Festival exploring art as a tool for building relationships with community and approaching wellness using creativity, collaboration, and relationships. She is excited to share her talents and passion with her CHAW students.
“Art & Activism students will learn about how artists past and present use art to fight for justice, resist oppression, and catalyze movements for social change,” says Kate. “The class will provide a chance for students to explore social issues that matter to them and make art that addresses their interests through a lens of activism.”
CHAW also hosts a Fashion Design Lab with teaching artist Betsy Garcete.
“In my class, students will master the use of shape to draw fashion figures with fabric and embellishments,” says Betsy. “The lab helps students focus on problem solving through design and discover meaning behind each artwork to create unique fashions for diverse body types.”
In addition to these classes, CHAW has ongoing youth mentoring opportunities available year round where students ages 12-17 can hone leadership skills and earn volunteer hours.
