Morning campers rotate daily through classes in visual art, ceramics, music & movement and recreation that explore the cultural and artistic traditions of Bhutan, Morocco, Peru, and Louisiana through hands-on activities.

Afternoon Specialty Camps

Afternoon campers choose from
Recreation Camp or one of five arts speciality camps that focus intensively on Hip-Hip Dance (for beginning, intermediate or advanced dancers),
Photography, Rock n' Roll or Musical Theater.
>Students must be 7 years old (8 years old for Rock n' Roll camp) by June 1, 2008 for specialty arts camps. Recreation Camp is open to children ages 5 - 13.
>Students who enroll in Afternoon Recreation Camp must also be registered for Morning Arts Camp.
>Please note, full day campers eat lunch from 1:00pm - 1:30pm. Lunch is not provided.
Recreation Camp Sessions I - IV, June 16-August 8, 2008
(Ages five to thirteen)
1:00-5:00 pm
Students ages five and up can participate in daily recreational activities from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students will rotate between trips to the swimming pool, parks, museums, local attractions, and more. Please note: You must be signed up for a morning session to participate in the afternoon Recreation Camp.

Beginning/Intermediate Hip-Hop Sessions I June 16-June 27, 2008
(Ages seven to thirteen)
1:00-5:30 pm
Through this beginning/intermediate level hip-hop experience, students will be introduced to FUN, energetic, and precise movements while also gaining the confidence to experiment, create and explore their own hip-hop style. Topics to be touched on include: Beginning level freestyle/improvisational movement, choreography, and experimental work with dynamics and feeling through tasteful and authentic hip-hop music. Photography Camp Session II, June 30-July 11(no camp July 4), 2008

1:30-5:30 pm
This two-week program, taught by CHAW photography instructor Alison Duvall, is a great introduction to both black + white and digital photography. The camp will cover the basics of pinhole photography, b+w photography, darkroom printing and computers/digital photography. Additional projects may be explored based on the students interest and backgrounds in photography.

Rock n' Roll Camp Session II, June 30-July 11(no camp July 4), 2008 (Ages eight to thirteen) 1:30-5:30 pm
Join CHAW music instructor Matt Dievendorf as we form a rock and roll band! While attending this class we will learn to “jam” with other musicians, create a “set list” of songs to learn, explore the role of each performer’s instrument, and discover the importance of listening carefully to our fellow bandmates. Guest artists will assist us in improving our instrument technique and improvising skills as we prepare the “set” for our first big show! Rock n’ Roll camp participants must be at least eight years old and have previous experience with a musical instrument. Musical instruments will be provided if student doesn’t own one however students may have to get fitted for the instrument.

Musical Theater Camp Session III, July 14 - 25, 2008

Students will sing, dance, and act their way through several decades of musical theater with Capitol Hill Youth Chorus Artistic Director Dr. Thea Kano . From Anything Goes to Annie. An intensive survey of musical theater, students will learn scenes and production numbers from many Broadway shows as well as participate in prop and costume design. The camp culminates with two public performances at CHAW (SESSION III: Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26; SESSION IV: Friday, August 8 and Saturday, August 9).

Jazz/Hip-Hop Camp Session IV, July 28-August 8, 2008 (Ages seven to thirteen) 1:30-5:30 pm
This camp provides intensive, professional training in jazz, hip hop, choreography, and performance in an intimate, nurturing setting. Taught by Roberta Rothstein, Artistic Director of Momentum Dance Theatre and Director of CHAW's Dance and Fitness Department, the faculty will also feature guest teachers for breaking, popping, and locking styles. The focus will be on technical skill building, increasing knowledge of injury prevention, learning choreography, and developing performance quality. Let your personal style shine through! Previous dance experience is required (or permission of instructor).
