CHAW is pleased to announce MK Bailey as the recipient of the 2020 Gallery Artist Residency, a five-week paid residency January 6 through February 10, 2020 in CHAW’s gallery at 545 7th Street, SE, Washington, DC, 20003. MK’s proposal FEVER DREAM includes constructing a life-size, evolving collage on a wall of the gallery space which will grow and change as she responds to the gallery environment. MK will be documenting the evolution of the piece with a series of paintings based off the installation over the course of the residency. The work will capture the twists and turns of her creative process and is meant to encourage contemplation on the evolving nature of inspiration. MK will be working in the gallery on weekdays during the residency. She will teach “Cut, Copy” a collage workshop for ages 12 and up on Saturday, January 18, 2020 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. A reception of MK’s work will take place on Friday, January 31, 2020 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.chaw.org or call (202) 547-6839.
“MK stood out among the many residency applicants for her beautifully rendered paintings,” says Ellen Cornett, CHAW’s Gallery Manager. “The goal of the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop Gallery Residency is to show how working artists create—giving visitors, students, staff, and faculty insight and inspiration into process. Speaking for us all, we are excited for the residency to begin.”
MK’s project expands on her most recent body of work, which was painted from digital collages created using found imagery. For her CHAW installation, MK is interested in exploring the close relationship between dreams and memories. The typical imagery found in her work is drawn from three main sources - the historical (i.e. the fine art canon), the personal, and the everyday. These individual images are positioned together in interactive ways to create complex stories and layers of meaning. By using collage this way, MK can build entire worlds for everything from the weirdest dreams to the most delicate of memories to inhabit.
"I was thrilled when CHAW invited me to be their 2020 Gallery Artist in Residence in October,” says MK. “Since then I've been preparing for the residency by collecting supplies for the installation, learning unfamiliar ways of creating (such as block printing!), and brainstorming the collage-making workshop I'll be hosting as part of the residency. CHAW is such a wonderful community, and I am honored to have their support going into this project. If you're interested in following along, I'll be documenting my progress using the hashtag “#CHAWair2020” which you can follow on Instagram and/or Facebook."
